The company is driven by four principals: Jamie Carss, Miles Scott-Brown, Thom Stubbs and Joseph Wells. Each of the Principals have over 25 years experience both domestically and internationally.

Environmental Management
Miles Scott-Brown Miles’ focus of expertise is environmental impact assessment and strategic management of environmental and social issues associated with economic and industrial development. He has experience in environmental assessment at the project and strategic levels, audits and supervision and monitoring for a variety of sectors.Miles has 25 years experience in the Canadian oil and gas sector and has worked in the Alberta oilsands area, the Northwest Territories and Yukon and throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

Internationally, he was environmental auditor of the World Bank, CAF and IADB funded Bolivia-Brazil pipeline was environmental expert to the World Bank Inspection Panel in review of the Chad Cameroon oilfield and pipeline project. Recently he conducted compliance audits of the BTC pipeline in Turkey and the Camisea Gas Project in Peru. Miles is fluent in English and Spanish with a working proficiency in Portuguese. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary.

Thom Stubbs, B.A., M.A.

Human Environment
Thom Stubbs Thom has provided strategic leadership, negotiation and mediation services to business and government for over 25 years. He is known for ability to provide key strategic direction on large, multi-party issues that require teamwork, development of a common vision and leadership to reach agreements between industry, environmental groups, and aboriginal and government agencies. Thom has led strategic reviews, mediated resource conflicts and facilitated agreements between companies, aboriginal groups, governments and resource interests. Thom has mediated resource conflicts in the forestry, oil and gas, aboriginal and Parks areas.

Thom has led the social and economic impact assessment, aboriginal relations, traditional knowledge and consultation teams numerous major projects. He led an appointed government Commission, serving the Federal Government, Yukon Government and First Nations to review and report on forest management in the Yukon. He was appointed to provide Canadian contributions to the Arctic Council’s Oil and Gas Assessment and its Arctic Shipping Assessments.Thom has extensive senior executive and project management experience as a team leader, negotiator, mediator, research director, and Deputy Minister. Thom has published articles and reports, led several public consultation processes, and served as a lecturer and speaker on resource management, public consultation, and strategic planning.

Joseph F. Wells, B.Sc.

Regulatory Management
Joseph Wells Joseph has worked in the field of environmental management since 1974. His early experience (1974-81) included National Parks Warden Service and gas field development and reclamation. He worked on project environmental planning and implementation for the Alaska Highway Gas Pipeline Project Norman Wells Pipeline. Since 1984, he has provided consulting services primarily to the energy sector. His area of practice in corporate environmental management and regulatory planning has included remediation strategies, environmental technologies, management of corporate environmental liability, and environmental planning. In addition, Joseph has contributed his experience in business strategy and planning to various projects requiring technical and commercial integration.

In addition to his work in the Western Canadian Energy Sector, Joseph has worked internationally on projects in Asia (Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan), Africa (Benin, Kenya, Egypt, Zambia, Togo, Malawi), Latin America (Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Costa Rica), Europe (United Kingdom, France), and the Middle East (Yemen, Jordan, Cyprus).

Environmental Assessment
Jamie Carss For more than 25 years James has carried out engineering assessments and provided oversight for development and environmental projects. His experience has been obtained in the permafrost areas of northern Canada and Alaska, the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and the equatorial region of Southeast Asia. His geotechnical work experience includes management of the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring for the opening of a major oil sands mine, development of management strategies for granular resources, assessment of proposed onshore and offshore pipeline routes throughout the Canadian Arctic Islands, design of several artificial ice and gravel islands constructed in the Canadian and American portions of the Beaufort Sea, and oversight of the design of offshore exploration and production structures for deployment in the Arctic.

His environmental experience includes assessment, investigation and remediation of sites impacted by organic and inorganic compounds. He has directed Phase I, Phase 2 and Phase 3 environmental assessment work at hundreds of impacted sites and has developed management strategies for portfolios of sites. His experience also includes managing multi-year contracts for the provision of environmental services at thousands of sites. In addition James spent 3 years in Malaysia developing an environmental consultancy that specialized in providing assessment, remediation, environmental impact assessment and environmental auditing services throughout southeast Asia and China.

David Berrade, M.A.

Community Development
David Berrade David Berrade is a Social Impact Specialist with an educational and work background in community development and land use assessment. With experience in both rural and urban settings, Mr. Berrade has worked directly with communities on economic growth strategies and entrepreneurial training while focusing on social and human capital management. He has completed projects throughout the Americas and in doing so participated in numerous committees incorporating government, industry, NGOs and public opinion. David is a published author and has been a guest speaker at various universities and the United Nations on Microenterprise development and stakeholder engagement.

Erin Swerdfeger, B.Sc.

Environmental Scientist
Erin Swerdfeger Erin has an Environmental Science degree from the University of Calgary, with a concentration in biology. Erin’s background includes population surveys, riparian and soil assessments, public workshops and presentations. Since joining the Integrated Environments team, Erin’s project experience includes public consultation, field site assessment, and database management.

Ian Gerritsen, B.Comm., L.L.B.

Regulatory Planner
Ian Gerritsen Ian Gerritsen has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Victoria. He has experience in the energy, communications, and financial industries, encompassing legal research, credit analysis, operations management and other responsibilities. Ian is currently involved in the development of a 420km-long pipeline project in Alberta. He is focusing on the areas of regulatory planning and scheduling, development of project management tools, development of regulatory applications, and public consultation and communications.

Manjunatha Ranga, M.Sc., M.N.R.M.

Environmental Scientist
Manju Manjunatha has a Master of Science degree from Bangalore University and a Master of Natural Resources Management degree from the University of Manitoba. He has experience in the areas of environmental site assessment (Phase 1 and Phase2), sewage treatment, community based management, land use planning and policy recommendations. He has worked with communities to understand the livelihood activities of wetland agriculture farmers while focusing on environmental and socio-economic impacts resulting from conversion of wetlands into monoculture shrimp farms. Manjunatha is currently focusing on the areas of environmental management, public consultation and communications.

Environmental Planner Natalie De Rochie
Natalie De Rochie has a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Alberta. She has experience in the areas of environmental assessment, environmental regulatory planning, reclamation assessment, environmental inspection and pipeline abandonment within the energy industry. Natalie is currently focusing on the areas of environmental management and strategic environmental and social assessment.

Robin Reese, B.Sc., M.E.Des.

Environmental Scientist
Robin Reese Robin’s studies honed her expertise in mammalogy, ornithology, animal physiology and behaviour, and environmental impact assessments. She’s completed wildlife and vegetation (including rare plant) surveys, Conservation and Reclamation applications, risk assessments and CEAA-based environmental assessments. Robin spent the past year on contract with Alberta Transportation, working for the Canada-Alberta Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CAMRIF) Program as a liaison between Alberta Municipalities and Governments of Canada and Alberta.

Chris Valaire, RPF., CCEP.

Senior Forester
Chris Valaire Mr. Valaire has a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management from the University of Alberta and a diploma in Environmental Sciences from NAIT. Chris is a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in Alberta and a Canadian Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEEP) and, incoming President of the College of Alberta Professional Foresters (CAPF). Chris worked as a Senior Provincial Forester with ASRD managing the ISO 9001 Registered Provincial Forest Operations Monitoring Program (FOMP) that has won a Premier’s award of excellence. Primarily, Chris’ career has been focused on strategic and sustainable forest management. He was also involved with First Nations consultation, AOA/EFR submissions, pipeline approvals, grazing/timber integration, invasive weed management and reclamation planning in the oilsands. Chris is a Lead Auditor in ISO 9001 and Internal Auditor in ISO 14001 certification regimes.
